When I started my beauty career as a Beauty Assistant for FAIRLADY Magazine in 2010, my first event that I attended happened to be a dinner celebrating Environ’s 20th birthday. It was then that I fell in love with the brand, met Dr Des Fernandes and began to admire his work.

Hearing the Environ team speak and watching a video that showed everything the brand and Dr Des had accomplished over the years blew me away. Now, here we are over a decade later, celebrating this incredible feat; a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Skin Cancer Foundation of South Africa (SCFSA for short) for his significant contributions to the skincare industry, more specifically, the technologies associated with skin rejuvenation, photoprotection, topical antioxidants and vitamins within the industry.

"I am truly humbled to receive this award. My work is and has always been driven by my passion for finding scientific solutions to common skin issues and sharing that knowledge as widely as possible. The skin is the largest organ in the human body and so it's my belief that we should all be united in understanding how it works and should be cared for," says Dr Fernandes.

Bravo, Dr Des. Thank you for everything you’ve done for the skincare industry. I can’t wait to see what you’ll do next!

The Lowdown On Sensitive Skin

I’ve always been fascinated by skin sensitivity. Mainly, because I have it. I had the opportunity to chat to Karen Bester, Lamelle Medical Training Manager and pick her brain about this skincare phenomenon that so many of us experience on a day-to-day basis. Here’s what she had to say:

Blog post 4 - group shot.jpg

KELLI: Define the term ‘sensitive skin’.

LAMELLE: Sensitive skin is skin that reacts to ingredients, products, changes in temperature and weather where the bulk of the population would not see any change in their skin. The reaction can vary from just feeling tight, through dryness and inflammation, right up to a full allergic reaction that could include swelling, puffiness, itchiness and hives.

KELLI: How do you know if you have sensitive skin?

LAMELLE: The easiest way to find out if your skin is sensitive is if you know you have to be cautious when applying particular products to your skin. For instance, if you’re on a weekend away and you can’t just grab your best friend’s general day-to-day BB cream or moisturiser and apply it to your skin because you know your skin will react, you probably have sensitive skin.

KELLI: Are there different variants of sensitive skin?

LAMELLE: There definitely are variants.

Some people will just have the odd bit of redness when they use a product that their skin is sensitive to. Others might find that their skin always feels sensitive and sore. I had a student once who mentioned that her skin was so sensitive it went red when the wind started to blow on it.

Some patients who have severe medical conditions like eczema and acne need to have cortisone creams on hand at all times in case of flare-ups.

Others need to be careful in winter when the air is less humid and their skin becomes dry - thus resulting in sensitivity.

KELLI: Can sensitive skin be cured?

LAMELLE: This would depend on the cause of the sensitivity. If you have a genetic predisposition to sensitive skin, curing it would be difficult. What we can however do, is add ingredients that are specifically focused on correcting the problems that lead to the sensitivity in your skin. In some cases we might even find, that with a little help, your skin will normalise functions and we might be able to get your skin back to its unreactive state.

If we know that the sensitivity was triggered by a specific ingredient or treatment, it is easier to cure it. Firstly, you need to remember not to apply that ingredient to your skin. We then need to correct what was ‘broken’ in your skin and make sure that it is properly fixed before you apply your usual products again. Avoiding the sensitising product may mean your skin might never react with sensitivity ever again.

KELLI: What ingredients should one look out for in a skincare product if you have sensitive skin? (Both to avoid and help prevent sensitive skin).

LAMELLE: If we truly consider sensitive skin, any ingredients that the skin gets exposed to regularly might cause irritation and an allergic reaction.

Dr Bradley Wagemaker, who is our formulating doctor and co-owner of Lamelle, insists on only formulating our products in such a way that they have the biggest potential to correct skin with the smallest risk for reaction in all skins. There in too lies a challenge – some ingredients might cause slightly more irritation. In those cases we will train the product specialist who are providing you with the products that they need to use these ingredients with care. This is why your skin care therapist will advise you to add in a product slowly over a few weeks and not just start using it twice a day in large amounts.

As a rule of thumb though we would suggest that you not use highly fragrances products and products where colourants have been added.

Then the argument for natural vs. chemical comes up – so let’s not ignore it.
The truth is that even natural ingredients have the potential to harm – arsenic and belladonna come to my mind. The word chemical is also misleading. H-2-O is a chemical and your body is made up of mostly H2O. Yes I do agree there are harmful chemicals in our world. I just don’t know why any manufacturer of skin care products, that wants a loyal client following, would put harmful chemicals in their product knowing that they are going to cause damage.

At Lamelle many of the ingredients we use are made in a laboratory. The most important ingredient in our Serra range is made in a laboratory.

Why?

In the laboratory we can mimic structures and molecules that you have in your body. This means we can replace a full structure – like the lipid bi-layer – exactly as it would look in between your cells in your corneum (outer layer of skin). There might be plant extracts that are close to compatible oils but none that will bio-mimic this structure. This gives us very safe and very effective treatment options that have been well researched to give us results.

KELLI: What is the most common age group for sensitive skin?

LAMELLE: Even though age is not a determining factor in sensitivity, it is true that the older skin is, the more risk for sensitivity there is.

The key skin structure in protecting the skin form sensitivity is the lipid bi-layer. This layer protects the viable skin from foreign substances that might penetrate and cause irritation. This is also the layer that traps water inside the skin. As we age we produce less of the components that make up this layer – affecting our water binding and potential for reaction.

The older you are the more potential allergens you have been exposed to, making you a higher risk to acquire sensitivity.

Genetic predisposition is not linked to age though.

KELLI: What triggers sensitive skin?

LAMELLE: In the skin, foreign substances or substances that your skin perceives to be irritating, trigger a nerve response. The nerves then trigger an immune response that then trigger an inflammatory response. The inflammation then affects how the barrier is produced. This then becomes a vicious cycle/circle of reactivity.

We also now have data to support that in some people their nerves are abnormally sensitive to any change in the skin due to receptors on the nerve walls being activated. These are people who will perceive constant sensitivity, pain and discomfort of their skins. In some cases their skin is also much more reactive than any other person that they know. This condition is called Sensitive Skin Syndrome.

Generally, there are a few categories of patients with sensitive skin:

·      Medical conditions, psoriasis, eczema or atopic dermatitis, acne rosacea.

·      Genetic predisposition.

·      Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, peri-menopause and menopause might trigger sensitivity.

·      Exposure to ingredients or procedures that cause the skin barrier to be impaired and the skin to be unprotected e.g. if you have a chemical peel and do not use the correct aftercare products.

·      Exposure to a harsh environmental factors - for instance working in the sun all day or living in a desert.

At Lamelle we have focus on what you are seeing in your skin:

·      Correct the lipid bi-layer (and don’t just apply a cream on top of the skin).

·      Correct the pH of skin that has been dry for a long period of time. When the pH is impaired the skin cannot rebuild its own lipid bi-layer.

·      Inhibit the inflammatory responses (calm and sooth inflammation).

·      In sensitive skin syndrome, we turn off the over active nerve ending.

·      Where required we add anti-microbial ingredients just to make sure we are protecting the skins integrity from microbes that might cause infections.

KELLI: Does diet play a role in increasing skin sensitivity?

LAMELLE: A poor diet will definitely affect you skin’s general condition. If you tend to have sensitivity to what you eat this will also cause reaction of your skin.

KELLI: What skincare routine should one have in order to keep sensitive skin under control?

LAMELLE: A good basic skin care routine is extremely important for any patient with a sensitive skin. The focus is to maintain a good barrier, calm any inflammation, correct the pH of the skin and protect your skin from possible irritants.

Cleanse, essence, moisturiser is the minimum basic with sunscreen during the day. Your skincare therapist might add some serums but that would depend on how much sensitivity you are experiencing at the point of your visit.

KELLI: What are the best products from Lamelle to help manage sensitive skin?

LAMELLE: All Lamelle, skin care products are formulated with sensitivity in mind. This does mean that your skincare therapist could add any of the products to your skincare regime. It’s important to initially stabilise and normalise processes in the skin that allow the sensitivity to take place. For this we always go back to the Serra range of products.

Your skincare therapist will choose the products that are most suited to your skin in her consultation with you.

However, I recommend using the below products during the following steps:

1. Cleanse

Use the Lamelle Serra Cleanser (R220). This is a creamy gel cleanser that contains very mild surfactants to break the surface tension of oils on your skin to remove oils, dirt, grime, pollutants and makeup off your skin.

2. Applying a Skin Essence

Aka skincare priming liquid. Your skincare therapist will choose the one that is most suitable for your skin:

·      Skin Essence Clear, R385 – for very sensitive and problematic skin

·      Skin Essence Rejuvenate, R410 – for younger, healthier skin

·      Skin Essence Corrector, R410 – for older, more sun-damaged skin that is not acne-prone

3. Applying a Corrector

When skin is very sensitive we suggest that you start with the most simple product routine. This step will be left out until we can correct the irritation. In less sensitive skins, your therapist might select one of the following Lamelle Correctives products to boost your results:

·      Correctives HA+ Serum, R700 – to boost hydration and plumping

·      Correctives Vita C Lipid Serum, R880  – boosts anti-oxidant levels for those who are exposed to free radicals or are smokers. The product is also highly recommended for management of ageing in sensitive skin.

·      Correctives Intensive GF Serum, R860 – Growth Factors are our best tool to rejuvenate skin and this formulation is highly stimulating of cells without risk of irritation.

·      Correctives Brightening Serum, R910 – for those who want to treat hyper-pigmentation but their skin is sensitive. Your skincare therapist will have to correct that before starting on the full pigmentation inhibition program. She can however add the Brighter Serum to your routine as it contains potent inhibitors of hyper pigmentation in a base that supports barrier repair.

4. Moisturise

There are three moisturisers in the Lamelle Serra Range:

·      Serra Restore Cream, R530 – for dry skin

·      Serra Soothing Cream, R725  – for dry skin that is showing signs of irritation

·      Serra NSB Cream, R640 (launched in April 2021) – for patients with very sensitive skin syndrome, those who experiece sensitivity with severe flushing and lastly, people who suffer from hypersensitivity. We believe this product will change how sensitivity is managed on skin for ever.

The new Serra NSB Cream is my new skincare lifesaver. It calms, soothes and sorts out any form of sensitivity. Try it!

5. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!

I know that some people might consider sunscreen on sensitive skin a bad idea.

Sensitive skin needs added protection from the sun. For this reason I advise that people with sensitive skin apply Lamelle Helase 50, R540. They need to apply their sunscreen daily, regardless of if they are spending time in direct sunlight.

For very sensitive and inflamed skin I would also advise that they take our oral Lamelle Clarity Acnevelle Plus Supplement, R290. The ingredients in Acnevelle Plus are focused on calming inflammation from inside your body.

KELLI: Is sensitive skin more common amongst men or women?

LAMELLE: At this stage it seems that women are more sensitive than men. It might have to do with the fact that woman seek help faster. It also does have to do with subtle differences in skin structure between men and women.

KELLI: Do you have any quick fix recommendations for sensitive skin flare-ups?

LAMELLE: There are no quick fixes, unfortunately.

Consumers who use the Lamelle Serra Range of products will get a near immediate relief.

Depending on the original cause of the sensitivity, most of us that have sensitive skin will have to be careful with how we look after our skin. It’ll help having some Lamelle Serra products close at hand. Just in case.

Each Optiphi skincare therapist I’ve met throughout the years has an undeniable passion for this proudly South African brand and rightly so.

I experienced a glorious 90 minutes of uninterrupted bliss at Tammy Taylor Nails Constantia Emporium and didn’t want to leave. Who could blame me though - Leah, my incredible therapist has magic hands and sorted out my tired-looking, dehydrated skin in just an hour and a half.

The Optiphi Classic Indulgent Hydrate & Repair Facial was designed to help with those who have redness and irritation. Burt's Bees is Back

Bzzz…

One of my favourite earth-friendly brands is back in SA!

Meet Burt’s Bees: an earth-friendly and iconic beauty brand born in the backyard of a beekeeper 30 years ago. I was introduced to BB back in my Beauty Editor days at FAIRLADY Magazine and was so excited to be reunited with it a few weeks ago.

Now, I feel like it’s my duty to spread the Burt’s Bees love….

It contains no parabens, petrolatum, SLS (which stands for Sodium Laureth Sulfate) or phthalates. The brand also doesn’t test on animals.

These fruity formulas pictured <in my hand above> are designed to soothe, moisturise and protect dry, chapped lips and have gone straight into my handbag . And car. And gym bag. And jacket pocket.

The cherry one has stolen my heart because of the scent (obviously) and slight red tint . However, they’re all the bee’s knees.

FYI: The cuticle balm works fantastically on your brows to keep them in place.

I’ve been dabbling in brow lamination of late (detailed blog post still to follow) and it’s proven to be a success.

Browse Takealot and Dis-Chem pharmacies’ online stores for the Burt’s Bees product selection if you don’t feel like popping into store!

Clarins Body Treatment Oil Review

My thoughts on the Clarins Body Treatment Oil range:

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of oils, especially ones for the body. Clarins has a range of the most beautiful, 100% plant-powered body treatment oils which I can’t get enough of. Here are my thoughts on the Relax Treatment Oil, Contour Treatment Oil and Tonic Treatment Oil. Their scents are so exquisite.

Fun fact: these body oils were the first three products ever produced by Clarins over 60 years ago!

Australian Gold Bronzing Dry Oil Intensifier

Meet the product that’s prolonging my summer tan…

136443541_1300816030317840_8928805534170121015_o.jpg

This summer, I decided to spend more time outside and as a result developed a bit of a tan. In order to keep my glow for as long as possible, I’m applying the Australian Gold Bronzing Dry Oil Intensifier to my legs and arms on a daily basis and can safely say it’s doing the trick!

This is the first product I’ve ever tried from well-known suncare brand, Australian Gold and I’m highly impressed. It hydrated my skin, enhanced my tan and soothed irritation that I had on my arm area. Please note: this product does not contain SPF.

Application is easy: simply apply the formula to dry skin. It leaves no greasy residue behind either and the scent is absolutely fabulous — each spritz smells like an island holiday. Imagine vanilla, orange and coconut all blended together in a bottle. Dreamy, right?

Two important ingredients found within the Bronzing Dry Oil Intensifier that I need to mention are Vitamin C and Tea Tree Oil. The Vitamin C helps protect the skin from free radicals while enhancing collagen production and the Tea Tree acts as another effective antioxidant which soothes and helps skin inflammation.

I’m officially an Australian Gold convert and can’t wait to give the rest of the products a bash.

Does Your Skin Need A Boost?

Neutrogena’s new Cellular Boost skincare range came to the rescue when my skin needed it most this year and I want to tell you all about it…

The Neutrogena Cellular Boost Range has four products which helps brighten tired-looking skin.

The Neutrogena Cellular Boost Range has four products which helps brighten tired-looking skin.

My skin took a turn for the worst in 2020. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one experiencing sporadic breakouts, increased redness, dullness and heightened hyperpigmentation, right? None of my products would absorb, I always looked tired and my complexion seemed flat. I lacked radiance. I needed help.

Cue the new range from Neutrogena Cellular Boost range that contains Hexinol®, Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid and Retinol. The four products worked well as a team and are also as effective when individually used. I was sad to see them finish (which is something I don’t often admit) and will definitely repurchase.

FYI:

*Retinol is only contained in the Cellular Boost Concentrate and Eye Cream.

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS

1. Neutrogena Cellular Boost Day Cream SPF 20, R259:

Look, I love a moisturiser with a built-in SPF. The texture of this day cream is almost identical to the night cream (you’ll read more about below). It’s the perfect balance between not-too-light and not-too-heavy; it doesn’t feel like there’s moisturiser on your skin but the results are evident. This day cream contains Hexinol®, an anti-ageing ingredient that smoothens the appearance of fine lines and helps maintain the skin’s elasticity. It also has Vitamin C, the number one ingredient to help correct uneven skintone, reduce dark spots and slows down further melanin production.

2. Neutrogena Cellular Boost Night Cream, R259:

Ever-so-lightly fragranced with a soft, buttery texture, the Neutrogena Rejuvenating Night Renew Cream shot to the top of my list in this range as I looked forward to applying this product to my skin before bedtime. Night-time products aren’t my favourite part of my skincare regime, as I’m super impatient and like to do the bare minimum (I’m more of a morning-routine-kinda-gal). This night cream was different though and worked well on my skin. It absorbed quickly and I woke up to zero greasy spots on my satin pillowcase in the morning – only a glowing complexion. It also contains the winning anti-ageing ingredient combo (Vitamin C and Hexinol®) which helps your skin look younger while you sleep. Clever!

3. Neutrogena Cellular Boost Eye Rejuvenating Cream, R259:

What makes this eye cream rather exciting is that it contains Retinol to help with hyperpigmentation, collagen, elastin production and helps stimulate surface skin cell renewal. I noticed a vast improvement around my eye area after 6 weeks of use; it appeared brighter and my dark circles had also disappeared. Honestly, it’s the best eye cream I’ve ever used. It really lives up to its name and rejuvenates.

My application tips for this particular eye cream:

*Tap, tap, tap. Don’t pull the skin of your eye area when applying eye cream. It’s so fragile, delicate and prone to fine lines and wrinkles. Be gentle and tap the product into your skin instead.

*Patience is key. Let your eye cream absorb before applying any other products.

*A little goes a long way. Be careful of using too much product. Rather use less.

*Retinol can increase skin sensitivity so be sure to wear SPF.

*Avoid the intimate part of your eye area and apply this eye cream onto your outer eye area, in a semi-circle shape (aka your cheekbone), using your ring finger.

4. Neutrogena Cellular Boost Concentrate Serum, R299:

Serums fascinate me to no end. They’re packed with highly active ingredients in a concentrated formula and treat the skin quickly, delivering fast results. This one did just that.

Retinol and Hyaluronic Acid found within the Neutrogena Cellular Boost Concentrate Serum transformed my skin within a month. I was meticulous with application though and put it on morning and night for extra effect. My skin is usually sensitive but with this product, it co-operated and the results were undeniable. Just like the others, this serum had a lightweight texture that reminded me of an ointment and it fit in perfectly with my skincare routine.

THE RESULTS

It’s not often that I love an entire product range, but here I am, raving about each one. Each product did its job and because of potent ingredients and a rigorous skincare regime, I saw positive results. The price point of each product is brilliant too.

Why You Should Use Neutrogena Hydrogel Sheet Masks

Image 1.jpeg

Admittedly, I was one of the last people in my industry to get into the whole sheet masking fad (shocking, I know, but I’m just being honest) and now can safely say that I can’t do without them. As I type this post, I’m sitting with the Neutrogena Purifying Boost (The Detoxifier) Hydrogel Recovery Mask on my face because, I enjoy to multi-mask (see what I did there?) and will walk you through the experience of wearing one of them, and of course, explain why these brilliant products should be incorporated into your life too – unless you’ve beaten me to it.

You’ll notice a pattern when it comes to the beauty products I rave about. They all seem to have two things in common:

1) They need to be fuss-free and…

2) Deliver great results, INSTANTLY.

Neutrogena Hydrogel Recovery Masks are heaven sent. In just 15 minutes, the equivalent of a 30ml bottle of concentrated moisturising serum is delivered to your skin. All you have to do is simply apply the Hydrogel sheet mask to your face and relax (or type a post raving about it if you want to save time, like me).

*1 mask = 1 application.

What Does a Sheet Mask Feel Like?

Removing the Hydrogel mask from the packaging can be tricky as you don’t want to lose any of the serum/product. This mask has two parts; one for the top half of your face (eyes, forehead and upper cheek area) and the other for your bottom half (bottom cheek area and chin). The Hydrogel mask itself feels quite jelly-like but cooling as soon as you put it on your face. Be sure to smooth out all the areas to even out the mask properly. You don’t want to miss any spots.

Which Neutrogena Hydrogel Recovery Mask Would You Pick?

Image 2.jpeg
  • Neutrogena Purifying Boost – The Detoxifier, R59,95:

This is the one I’m wearing right now and feel my skin needs the most. With silly season upon us, this mask may be your new best friend. December and January means consuming more of everything, which takes its toll on your skin. ‘The Detoxifier’ contains seaweed extract which intensely purifies, helps your complexion look healthy and feel super soft. I’ve used this one countless times before and it’s my go-to after a long, exhausting weekend of one too many glasses of bubbles.

  • Neutrogena Radiance Boost – The Illuminator, R59,95:

Dull-looking skin? ‘The Illuminator’ should be your mask of choice because it contains Vitamin B3, known to perk up tired-looking skin (which we all need from time-to-time), illuminate, enhance radiance and leaves you feeling refreshed and glowy.

Remember, one mask application is the equivalent of one month’s serum use. It’s incredible.

  • Neutrogena Hydro Boost – The Super Hydrator, R59,95:

‘The Super Hydrator’ is my favourite of them all but I haven’t had to use it recently as my hydration levels have been good. But, if you’re in the need for a mega boost of hydration – this mask will be your saving grace. It contains heaps of Hyaluronic Acid which as you know, intensely hydrates the skin, making it feel supple and resulting in an overall healthy glow. It’s also suitable for sensitive skin.

  • Neutrogena Ageless Boost – The Smart Smoother, R59,95:

‘The Smart Smoother’ lives up to its name and rightly so – it contains Adenosine which helps smooth the skin, fill in fine lines and gives your complexion a youthful appearance. Sounds good, right? Each mask that I’ve referred to is designed to resemble a ‘second skin’, allowing the active ingredients to penetrate the skin.

How To Use Each Mask:

Step 1. Cleanse your face thoroughly.

Step 2. Peel the white film backing from the Hydrogel sheet mask and discard.

Step 3. Place the hydrogel mask onto your face and leave on for 30 minutes. (Tip: You can leave it on for 15 minutes but I prefer sitting for 30 minutes in order for my skin to soak up all the benefits of this product. It’s entirely up to you, though).

Step 4. Remove the Hydrogel sheet mask and massage what’s left of the product onto your face and neck.

Image 11.jpeg

Kelli’s Top Masking Tips:

1) I use my Hydrogel masks before bedtime as it gives the product and ingredients enough time to absorb – plus, it’s the ideal way to wind down after a long day. Remember, you can only get one application from one mask.

2) Why wait until January 2020 to begin your ‘beauty ‘ New Year’s resolution? Rather kickstart it now, in December, to make sure your skin’s always looking fab.

3) These Hydrogel masks are the ideal products to travel with. They take up minimal space in your toiletry bag, have strong packaging that will definitely not leak and it’s also a great way to relax during your holiday.

4) Do NOT apply moisturiser before your mask. Just cleanse your skin. The whole purpose of the Hydrogel sheet mask is for your skin to absorb ingredients properly and effectively.

5) These Neutrogena Hydrogel masks are essentially serums so make sure you use the leftover bits of the formula and apply it to your skin. Every little bit helps.

6) Designate one day a week as your masking day. I choose Sunday evenings as it’s a great way to unwind and start the new week afresh.

*All masks are R59,95 each and are available from Clicks & Dis-Chem.

Spot The Difference With Eucerin Even Pigment Perfector

I like to keep in touch with my social media community by conducting polls asking them questions about their skincare concerns. Do you want to know what the most common answer is? It’s hyperpigmentation, followed by uneven skintone and lastly, dullness.

I’m also no stranger to dark spots and marks on my face, arms and body; I blame my tanning days as a teen (we’re all guilty, admittedly) and now, at the age of 32, I’m dealing with the repercussions. Pair my hyperpigmentation with a lack of radiance and you’ve got an ideal candidate for Eucerin’s new Even Pigment Perfector Range, undoubtedly one of the brand’s most exciting launches to date. I was introduced to the range in May 2019 and couldn’t wait to put it to the test.

1.JPG

The Hero Ingredient

After ten years of scientific research, Eucerin developed the breakthrough active ingredient Thiamidol, a patented molecule to effectively fight dark marks at the source and prevent their re-appearance with regular use of the range. Global clinical trials showed first visible results after two weeks, with further improvement after twelve weeks. Local clinical trials on South African women also showed 100% success rate, with each woman claiming that her skintone was more even, her dark marks less pronounced and complexion more radiant than ever.

But, What Does Thiamidol Do?

We all know that the main triggers of dark spots on the skin are hormonal changes, ageing or sun exposure. From our face to our hands, hyperpigmentation can occur anywhere on the body.

Thiamidol, the patented ingredient found within the Even Pigment Perfector range tackles dark marks and uneven skintone at its source by inhibiting Tyrosinase which produces melanin (that gives skin its brown colour). Each product in the range contains Thiamidol which is fast acting, yet gentle on the skin. I was militant about my routine, using these three products daily over a six week period and can safely say, that it worked for my skin.

Here’s My Verdict

Let’s face facts: when your skin feels great, you do too. My complexion was very ‘meh’, quite lackluster and needed a heavy dose of glow. I reckon there’s been a vast improvement – namely, my even skin tone and obvious brightness. The darker spots (and general areas) on my face and neck have lightened and appears to be more radiant. See below for yourself.

Before and After.JPG

Before (left) 6th May 2019 and After (right) 27th June 2019

Introducing… The Products:

1) Eucerin Even Pigment Perfector Dual Serum: This was my favourite product of the lot which has a ‘dual chamber’ technology. You just need one pump of the serum for your entire face. Apply after cleansing, before your day cream in the morning, and your night cream before bedtime. It helps with redness too; one of my other skincare issues that I’m very passionate about. (R599,99 for 30ml)

2) Eucerin Even Pigment Perfector Day Cream SPF 30: I loved how lightweight and smooth the texture of this day cream was. Plus, the fact that it had a built-in SPF 30. It is incredibly nourishing though and made my skin feel soft. It absorbed quickly and worked as an excellent base for me to apply my foundation. (R449,99 for 50ml)

3) Eucerin Even Pigment Perfector Night Cream: After washing my face, I applied the Eucerin Even Pigment Perfector Dual Serum again (remember, all you need is one pump), followed by the night cream. My skin always felt velvety soft when I’d wake up. (R449,99 for 50ml)

Introducing NIVEA’s Newest Skincare Range: Hyaluron Cellular Filler Elasticity

Let’s be real for a second – we all have ageing concerns the older we get. It’s impossible for our skin to look, behave and feel the same as it did in our twenties (it’s a fantastic thought though, right?) but, thankfully, we have brilliant facial products available to improve the condition and sort out our skincare woes.

Personally, one of my concerns has been loss of volume within my face, along with elasticity. I’ve been training at the gym at least 4-5 times a week since the beginning of January and of course, I’m happy with my weight loss, but I’ve noticed that my skin has started to sag a bit. You can imagine how happy I was when I got given the NIVEA Hyaluron Cellular Filler Elasticity Range to try out; a range designed specifically to target this problem.

We’re also changing seasons at the moment. It’s getting cold (#WinterIsComing) and my skin enjoys going into ‘lazy mode’, resulting in a lot of moisture loss and dryness. Each product in the range contains Hyaluronic Acid (music to my ears), the best ingredient to boost and maintain moisture levels within your skin. Other environmental factors such as pollution and stress also contribute to your skin looking dull, feeling sensitive and uneven. After using the range for a few weeks, I can safely say that I haven’t experienced any of these things, even after a recent trip to Johannesburg and my skin has remained hydrated, smooth and looked more radiant.

Elastin and Collagen work hand in hand to keep the skin looking firm and youthful and are the other two hero ingredients found within the range. The Elastin fibres responsible for getting the skin back to its original shape along with the protein Collagen made my skin feel tighter and more defined. I was incredibly impressed.

Let me walk you through each product in the NIVEA Hyaluron Cellular Filler + Elasticity Range:

1. The NIVEA Hyaluron Cellular Filler Elasticity Anti-Spot Serum, R289,99 for 30ml has a soft, velvety texture with a pump dispenser, making it ideal for travel. This serum has a powerful melanin inhibitor, which helps reduce the appearance of dark spots (admittedly, I didn’t have many) while keeping the skin sufficiently hydrated.

I would use it in conjunction with the NIVEA Hyaluron Cellular Filler Elasticity Day Cream SPF 15 (more details about this product below), as it contains a sun protection benefit and achieved more holistic results such as overall radiance.

2. The NIVEA Hyaluron Cellular Filler Elasticity Day Cream SPF 15, R269,99 for 50ml was my favourite product of them all! The texture, the scent, the way it quickly absorbed into my skin – I could go on and on. It’s a winner. I’m close to finishing my tub. I love that it had a built-in SPF to protect my skin and of course, kept it hydrated and feeling fresh.

3. I’d apply the NIVEA Hyaluron Cellular Filler Elasticity Night Cream, R269,99 for 50ml at night of course and woke up with plumped up skin. The texture of this cream is a lot thicker and richer than the day cream and leaves  your skin feeling super nourished the next morning. You only need to apply a thin layer before bedtime.

4. Last but not least is the NIVEA Hyaluron Cellular Filler Elasticity Bi-phase Nourishing Oil Elixir, R289,99 for 30ml. I would apply this either in the morning or evening, after shaking the bottle to mix the formula, depending how parched my skin was. The triple-oil complex found within this product was responsible for keeping my skin nourished, moisturised and a lot more youthful.

The entire range is already on shelves and I’d highly recommend it to those who need a moisture boost, have elasticity concerns and want more skin definition. All the products are lightly fragranced and absorb like a dream. They’ll fit easily into your current skincare routine.

How Avène Thermal Spring Water Keeps My Skin Under Control

When you think of a facial mist, what springs to mind? Besides the way it cools the skin, keeps your makeup in place and provides a quick refresh during those scorching summer days – the defining factor of a facial mist for me personally, and of course, I’m referring to Avène’s Thermal Spring Water in this case, is the way it calms my redness and soothes the inflammation.

I’m very open about my mild form of rosacea that occurs on my nose and cheeks area. It flares up when you least expect it and is super uncomfortable; it itches, sometimes burns and gives your skin a hot, uneasy feeling.

I use lots of facial products to ‘tame’ it but nothing works as quickly and effectively as the Avène Thermal Spring Water.

I’ve used this spray for years so I’m no stranger to this miracle worker and now find it difficult to not incorporate it into my daily life. Having started a rigorous gym regime two months ago, (I do up to five sessions a week) meant that I needed a quick fix to perk up my skin but keep it under control.

My Top 5 Tips for Avène’s Thermal Spring Water

1. Don’t be reluctant to use the spray after an intense workout – it’s safe to use on your face as well as your body. It cools your skin down and refreshes it within seconds. Hold the mist 15-20cm away from the area and spritz away.

2.  Avène’s Thermal Spring Water is available in three different sizes: 50ml, 150ml and 300ml. I always keep one in my handbag (ideal for traveling, especially when flying), the medium size one in my gymbag (we all know why) and one next to my bed as my skin likes to go red sometimes before I go to bed.

3. It’s brilliant to cool down your body temperature after a hot shower! Ever since I’ve started working out, my body battles to get back to its normal temperature and when I apply makeup, little beads of sweat would form. The Avène Thermal Spring Water prevents this and keeps your skin under control.

4. Feel free to use the spray on babies and small children. It’s completely safe and suits even the most sensitive skin types.

5. Try the Avène Thermal Spring Water on your scalp too. It works wonders on sunburn and soothes it profusely, without making your hair look or feel dirty.

YES, the Foreo LUNA™ 2 is Worth The Hype!

the foreo luna 2.JPG

Two months ago, the incredible Dermastore team sent me my very own Foreo LUNA™ 2 for Normal Skin (that’s the pink one) to test out and I have been so impressed with the results. After my trip to Zanzibar (end of September 2018), my complexion appeared all tanned and glowy but if you looked closely, the top layer of my skin felt dry, rough and flakey. I noticed my regular facial products weren’t penetrating my skin properly.

My pores appeared bigger, regardless of how much primer I used, and my foundation, well, instead of providing the usual natural finish, just looked uneven. Worst of all, it just looked obvious that I was wearing makeup and that’s a huge pet peeve of mine. I tried various masks, exfoliators, you name it – but nothing could do the trick. My only hope was the LUNA™ 2 and it exceeded my expectations tremendously.

How to use the device:

  1. Make sure the LUNA™ 2 is fully charged (you will receive all this equipment in the box).

  2. Apply your cleanser all over your skin. Even the most gentle cleansers work effectively in conjunction with the LUNA™ 2.

  3. Wet the LUNA™ 2 (don’t be shy) and use the + and – buttons on the device to control the speed.

  4. Using the side containing the bristles, apply the device in circular motions to your skin for one minute only.

  5. Rinse any excess cleanser off.

  6. Apply your usual skincare products (eg. moisturiser, serum, etc.)

  7. Flip the LUNA™ 2 around to use the Anti-Ageing Mode and use this to massage your skincare products into the skin for another minute. Focus on areas of concern that have fine lines and wrinkles. This will help with skincare product absorption and stimulate the skin.

  8. And there you have it! Glowing, smooth skin. Don’t forget to rinse your LUNA™ 2 with warm water, leave in a cool place to dry and charge it when you can.

I’ve compiled a list of FAQs regarding the fabulous Foreo LUNA™ 2

1. What does the LUNA™ 2 actually do?

What can’t the LUNA™ 2 do? It eliminates 98.5% of excess oil and dirt, using the latest T-Sonic™ Technology. It thoroughly cleanses your skin and removes makeup effectively. It doesn’t take up a lot of room and is the perfect traveling companion to ensure your skin always feels and looks its best. After only 2-3 uses, you’ll notice that your foundation applies better – all due to better product absorption because of the LUNA™ 2. It’s also safe to use on your neck area, not just your face.

2. Does the LUNA™ 2 work well with all skincare products? Are there any products I need to use/stay away from?

The LUNA™ 2 works well with anything. Any cleanser is effective, but try stay away from ones that are abrasive. I recommend using a foaming cream cleanser with it, like the new La Roche-Posay Pigmentclar or SkinCeuticals Replenishing Cleanser Cream.

3. Is it best to use it in the morning/evening? Can I use it twice a day or is it too stimulating/overwhelming for the skin?

You can use it twice a day and it won't over-stimulate or anything. Although, I’ve incorporated mine into my nighttime cleansing routine before I go to sleep. The more you use it, the more your skin gets used to it and you’ll soon see what your skin needs.

4. What different devices are there?

There’s quite a variety! I am using the one for Normal Skin, but there’s a device for sensitive skin, men, combination skin, oily skin and there are mini devices too.

Click here to see all of them.

5. How much is it? And where can I buy it?

It’s R3400 and you can purchase it from Dermastore. Their delivery service is impeccable. You won’t be disappointed!

MY PERSONAL TIP:
A lot of you that follow me on social media would know that I’ve experienced Dermaplaning twice before. I am sure this contributed to the smoothness of my skin but do believe that using the LUNA™ 2 each day for the past two months religiously has made my skin look better than ever before.
