Women I Admire: Meet Judy Angela, Manager of The George Business Chamber

Some women simply have a knack for bringing people together. Judy Angela is one of them.

As Manager of the George Business Chamber, Judy is at the heart of our local business community. For Women’s Month, I sat down with her to get to know the woman behind the role and discover a few things you might not know about her.

What first drew you to the George Business Chamber and what has kept you passionate about your role?

I was introduced to the Chamber in 2005 where I met Colleen Till the CEO of the Chamber at the time. She was passionate and focused on helping people. This jumped out at me because today the Chamber still strives to help people – it is all about community and I love this!

What does a typical day look like for you and what's your go-to fuel when things get busy: coffee, tea or something else?

Admin, answering many emails, telephone calls and WhatsApps and most of all, speaking to loads of different people. I mean, I have a job where I get paid to speak! My fuel of choice is coffee, water and ostrich biltong.

As a woman working in business and community development, what have you found to be both rewarding and challenging?

The reward is seeing the result of when a town stands together to be true to the upliftment of others. We are working on the challenge but commitment in business and partnerships is lacking.

What's your favourite way to spend a day off?

When I visit my grandchildren and it is time to nap – I love napping with them. When I wake, my arm is normally tingling from the way I need to position myself to sleep, but it’s so worth it.

Is there a woman who has inspired you throughout your career or personal journey and what is it about her that you admire?

There are two: Mother Teresa and Audrey Heburn. Mother Teresa did not care for heels or make-up. Audrey Hepburn was the epitome of style. But they are both examples of people who took what they had been given (a platform, a life spared from hardship, a following) and turned it outward. Their passion for people was undeniable.

What's something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I was crowned the first Mrs Garden Route in 2013!

What are you most excited about for the future of the George Business Chamber?

I am very excited about GEO our Mascot and the focus we have on our youth. The plans we have for helping the young entrepreneurs and our smaller businesses are also super exciting for me.
