Rain Check: 10 Things to Do When the Weather Has Other Plans

There’s something about a rainy weekend that makes staying home feel completely justified. No rushing around, no feeling guilty about cancelling plans and, best of all, nowhere you need to be.

While a weekend stuck indoors might initially sound boring, it can actually be the perfect excuse to slow down, get cosy and do a few things you never seem to have time for during the week.

Here are 10 ways to make the most of a rainy weekend at home.

1. Have a proper movie marathon

Not just one movie while you scroll through your phone. Pick a theme, choose three or four films, make some popcorn and settle in. It could be old favourites, a particular actor, classic comedies or simply a list of films you’ve been meaning to watch forever. Add blankets and snacks and you’ve got yourself a pretty good Saturday.

2. Cook something you wouldn’t normally make

Rainy weather is the perfect excuse to spend a little more time in the kitchen.

Try a new recipe, bake something from scratch or make a big pot of soup, pasta or curry that can simmer away while you’re doing other things. There’s also something very satisfying about having a homemade meal waiting for you when the weather outside is miserable.

3. Have a proper declutter

Okay, perhaps not the most exciting suggestion - but hear me out. A rainy day is ideal for tackling that cupboard, drawer or room you’ve been avoiding. Put on some music and spend an hour sorting through things you no longer use.

You don’t have to reorganise your entire house. Even clearing one small space can make the rest of your weekend feel surprisingly productive.

4. Get stuck into a book

Put your phone somewhere out of reach and actually read.

Whether it’s a novel you’ve been working through, a new release or an old favourite, rainy weather creates the perfect atmosphere for getting lost in a book. Make a cup of tea, find a comfortable spot and give yourself permission to spend a few uninterrupted hours reading.

5. Turn your home into a café

If you can’t go out for coffee, bring the coffee shop experience home.

Make your favourite drink, put on a playlist, find a cosy corner and grab something nice to eat. You could even make pancakes, French toast or your favourite café-style breakfast.

Sometimes changing the setting is enough to make an ordinary morning feel like an outing.

6. Have a games afternoon

Dig out the board games, cards or a puzzle that’s been sitting untouched in a cupboard.

A rainy weekend is a great opportunity to do something that doesn’t involve a screen. And if you’re with family or friends, a little competitive spirit can make the afternoon even more entertaining.

7. Plan your next getaway

If you’re stuck inside, there’s no reason you can’t plan your next adventure.

Look at destinations you’ve always wanted to visit, find somewhere for a weekend away or start putting together a road-trip playlist. You don’t even need to book anything - sometimes half the fun is simply dreaming about where you’re going next.

8. Have a proper catch-up

Use the weather as an excuse to reconnect.

Invite a friend over, call someone you haven’t spoken to in ages or have a long, uninterrupted chat with the people you live with. Make drinks, order takeaway and spend a few hours catching up without trying to squeeze the conversation into a busy schedule.

9. Start a little DIY project

You don’t need to be particularly crafty to enjoy a DIY afternoon.

Try painting something, making a photo album, putting together a scrapbook, rearranging a room or finally starting that hobby you’ve been talking about for months.

The point isn’t to create something perfect. It’s simply to do something with your hands and see where it takes you.

10. Do absolutely nothing

And finally, remember that you don’t actually have to be productive.

Put on comfortable clothes, make a drink, watch TV, listen to the rain and enjoy having nowhere to go.

We’re so used to filling every spare minute that doing nothing can feel strangely difficult. But sometimes a completely unproductive afternoon is exactly what you need.

A rainy weekend doesn’t have to mean a boring weekend. Sometimes the best plans are the ones that involve staying home, slowing down and enjoying the little things you normally don’t have time for.
